Production
Julie Gardner initially commissioned the series from Russell T Davies while she was at Granada-owned London Weekend Television. After Gardner became BBC Wales’ Head of Drama in 2003, she brought the project to the BBC as part of the same arrangement that made Davies the chief writer and Executive Producer of Doctor Who, a show also overseen by Gardner at BBC Wales. David Tennant’s performance as Giacomo Casanova led Davies to cast him as the Tenth Doctor. In the United States, the program aired as two episodes on 8 and 15 October 2006; the complete, unedited British version came out on DVD the following week, 17 October 2006. Australia’s ABC also broadcast it, cut into two parts.
