Premise
The series follows Polly, a single and uptight divorced mother who moves back in with her laid-back parents, Elaine and Max, after leaving her husband and due to the economic downturn. Polly struggles with her parents' lifestyle, a best friend she almost dated, and an ex-husband who wants her back.
Development and production
In January 2012, ABC placed a pilot order for the series. Claudia Lonow wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner and head writer, executive producing alongside Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo under Imagine Entertainment. Casting began in February 2012, with Sarah Chalke cast as Polly. Jon Dore joined as ex-husband Julian, Elizabeth Perkins as mother Elaine, Rachel Eggleston as daughter Natalie, and Brad Garrett as stepfather Max. Rebecca Delgado Smith was cast as Jenn, and Orlando Jones as Gregg. On May 11, 2012, ABC ordered the series. Shortly after, Smith and Jones were dropped; Smith's role was recast with Stephanie Hunt. Production began early, and the first season was completed by November 2012.
