Cast and characters
Alicia Silverstone portrays Kate Fox, a divorce lawyer who also works as a matchmaker, though her own romantic life is complicated. She becomes involved with Michael and later his best friend Adam, and often inserts herself into the relationships she arranges for others. Lake Bell plays Victoria Carlson, Kate's best friend and a bartender who observes Kate's setups and typically engages only in flings, such as one with Nick; the only man she shows deeper interest in is Adam. David Conrad appears as Michael Mendelson, Kate's on-and-off boyfriend after she sets him up on dates; his ex-girlfriend Lauren left him for his best friend Adam. Jodi Long plays Claire, a secretary at Fox & Associates. James Roday Rodriguez portrays Nick Paine, a womanizing co-worker of Kate who later dates Victoria. Ryan O'Neal plays Jerry Fox, Kate's father and owner of the law firm, who still has feelings for Kate's mother and later becomes linked with Serena. Charisma Carpenter appears as Serena Lockner, an old classmate who adopts a baby with Kate's help and later returns to romance Jerry. Dina Meyer plays Lauren Logan, Michael's ex-girlfriend and Adam's ex-wife, who sues Kate's firm for malpractice after learning of Kate's involvement with Adam. Nathan Fillion plays Adam Logan, who arrives when Lauren hires Kate as her divorce lawyer and becomes involved with both Kate and Victoria. NBC cross-promoted the series by having Deanna Wright, Galen Gering, and McKenzie Westmore from the soap opera Passions appear in an episode.
Production
The series was executive produced by Darren Star, who also directed the pilot, and Jeff Rake, who wrote the pilot, along with David Nevins and Brian Grazer.
