Premise

Rookie FBI Agent Rebecca Locke joins the Los Angeles Violent Crimes Unit after the death of a previous member. She proves to be a brilliant investigator, but she has a secret known only to herself and the unit's director Virgil "Web" Webster: as a 10-year-old girl, she was kidnapped and held captive for 18 months, escaping by setting a fire. Webster manipulates her experience to help the team understand victims and criminals. A moral struggle develops between Webster, who uses Rebecca's gift at all costs, and her partner Paul Ryan, who acts as a voice of conscience. Webster's own past remains mysterious.

Cast and characters

Rebecca Locke (Rachel Nichols) is the rookie field agent brought in by Web to use her gift. She can put herself in victims' shoes due to her own trauma, making her skilled at getting inside a killer's mind. Series creator Minear described her as a "character with no inside," hence the show's title. She has trust issues and lacks a social life, but slowly grows to like her colleagues. Danny Love (Adam Baldwin) is an ex-marine who is blunt and crude, with a rapport with Agent Melody Sim; he often leads assaults on crime scenes. Melody "Mel" Sim (Katie Finneran) is a quick-witted, intelligent agent who mourns her lack of social life and shares a friendship with Danny. Carter Howard (Nelsan Ellis) provides technological expertise. Paul Ryan (Jay Harrington) is a young, married agent chosen by Web to be his "conscience"; idealistic and kind, he sees things in black and white and clashes with Web over principles. Virgil "Web" Webster (Peter Coyote) is the supervisor who selected his squad based on their secrets, weaknesses, and strengths; he pushes agents to the limit and bends rules.

Production

Originally developed by Kathryn Bigelow, the show initially followed a 23-year-old woman, Rebecca Locke, who went undercover as a high school student to infiltrate a drug ring. After original creators Todd Kessler and Glenn Kessler left in September 2004, Tim Minear took over redevelopment, with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and David Nevins joining as executive producers. Peter Facinelli was initially attached but departed that December after Minear changed the premise to focus on Locke as an FBI agent in a violent crimes unit. Jay Harrington replaced Facinelli, and Adam Baldwin, a Firefly alum, also joined. Fox scheduled the series for Wednesdays at 9:00 pm starting June 8, 2005, but aired only seven episodes out of order before canceling it due to low ratings.
