Plot

The series centres on the Brockman family, a middle-class household in Chiswick, west London, where parents Pete and Sue are outnumbered by their three children. Pete, a history teacher at a dysfunctional inner-city school, and Sue, a part-time personal assistant four years younger than him, struggle to manage Jake, the sarcastic teenage straight man obsessed with girls; Ben, a hyperactive pathological liar who experiments with insects and asks hypothetical questions; and Karen, who asks endless questions, imitates television shows, and criticises nearly everything. Recurring characters include Sue's new age sister Angela Morrison, their elderly father Frank (Granddad) who has early-stage dementia, and in later series, Pete's mother Sandra (Gran), an online-gambling addict separated from Pete's father. Series three introduces Kelly, a psychology student Jake has a crush on; Angela's new husband Brick, an American therapist later revealed as abusive; and a campaigner against speed bumps. By series five, Jake has become cocky with a suspect crowd of friends, Ben has grown in size but not maturity, and Karen has become moody and sullen as she approaches a prestigious secondary school.

Production

Outnumbered was the first collaboration between Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin since Drop the Dead Donkey ended in 1998, commissioned by BBC controller Lucy Lumsden. The executive producer is Jon Rolph. A 20-minute pilot led to a six-episode series. The show is set in Chiswick, West London, and shot on location in Wandsworth, with the external house on Dempster Road. The writers use improvisation to achieve convincing performances from the child actors, who were cast based on how their responses matched character outlines. Ramona Marquez was in the same class as Guy Jenkin's twin sons, and his wife suggested her. The fourth series began on 2 September 2011 at 9.00 p.m. on BBC One. The fifth and final series of six episodes began airing on 29 January 2014. A 2016 Christmas special was confirmed in September 2016. On 23 May 2024, the BBC revealed a Christmas special for December 2024, the first episode in eight years. On 20 December 2024, Andy Hamilton said he has not ruled out future episodes, adding 'Well, you should never say never, but I just said it twice'.

Reception

The show initially received a mixed reception, but after the second series reviews became fairly positive. The Daily Mirror compared its mundane settings to Seinfeld, noting it was more low-key and realistic than My Family, with improvisation similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm but with milder language. Kevin Maher of The Times dismissed the programme as not funny or dramatic enough, criticising a scene where the father pays his son to give up a power drill as emblematic of fake pay-offs. Rod Liddle in The Sunday Times praised the show despite his expectations, calling it very funny and noting that the BBC still knows how to make people laugh.

DVD releases

2 Entertain has released all five series and three Christmas specials on DVD. The Series 2 disc includes the first Comic Relief special, the Series 3 disc holds the first Sport Relief special, and the Series 4 disc contains the second Comic Relief special. The second Sport Relief special is expected to appear on either a future Christmas special DVD or the Series 5 set. As of May 2025, it remains unknown if the 2024 Christmas special has been or will be made available on DVD.
