Overview
The cast of The Challenge varies each season, originally drawing from The Real World and Road Rules. Over time, casting expanded to include contestants who debuted on The Challenge itself and from other MTV franchises. Since 2018, new contestants have been selected from outside MTV programming, with many recent alumni coming from shows such as Survivor, The Amazing Race, Are You the One?, Big Brother, Ex on the Beach, Vanderpump Rules, and Love Island, as well as non-reality entertainment and sports programs. Contestants are typically divided into teams or pairs based on criteria that change each season, such as gender, original show, heroic or villainous status, rivalries, countries, family members, or ex-romantic partners. The competition format varies, with elimination rounds determining who is removed from the season. Some seasons, like The Island, adopted features from other shows such as Survivor. The first season, Road Rules: All Stars, had a smaller cast and no monetary prize, but a cash prize has been awarded for winning the final mission in all subsequent seasons.
History
A playful rivalry between the casts of Road Rules and The Real World led to a face-off during the filming of The Real World: Boston and Road Rules: Islands, when the two casts met in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Producers arranged a competition for a cash prize, which drew high ratings and inspired the spin-off series. The series debuted in April 1998 as Road Rules: All Stars, featuring cast members from five seasons of The Real World. Another face-off, AquaGames, aired later in 1998 between The Real World: Seattle and Road Rules: Down Under. After the first season, producers included former Road Rules cast members. The next season sent two six-member teams around the world to compete. In 2002, Battle of the Seasons departed from the six-member structure, bringing a larger group to one location and introducing eliminations, initially through majority voting and later through elimination competitions.
Spin-offs
The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, originally called The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros, is a recurring mini-series where Challenge alumni compete against celebrities for charity. In 2020, Mark Long began a social media campaign called "We Want OGs" for a new version featuring former cast members, leading to a partnership with Bunim/Murray Productions and the announcement of The Challenge: All Stars on February 24, 2021. In February 2022, international adaptations were announced for Australia, Argentina, the UK, and The Challenge: USA on CBS with CBS reality show alumni. These series aired on Paramount-affiliated networks and streamed on Paramount+. The Challenge: World Championship followed, featuring winners and notable players from the international adaptations and the main series. A second season of The Challenge: USA premiered on August 10, 2023. On June 27, 2024, a Swedish version was announced, airing on TV4 from August 12, 2024, as the first franchise series produced outside Bunim/Murray Productions, with a second Swedish season set for 2026.
