Production
The series was greenlit on March 26, 2014. It is the sixth installment in the Keeping Up with the Kardashians franchise, following Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons, and the first not to feature any Kardashian family members as main cast. The network ordered eight hour-long episodes. The show is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions and Ryan Seacrest Productions, the same companies behind Keeping Up with the Kardashians and its spin-offs. Executive producers include Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins, Farnaz Farjam, Claudia Frank, the Kardashian sisters, and Kris Jenner. The premise centers on Dash, a chain of retail stores founded in 2006 by the Kardashian sisters, with the series set in a West Hollywood boutique opened in 2012 after relocation from Calabasas, California. On April 5, 2015, an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians introduced the Dash Dolls through a storyline in which Khloé Kardashian organized a teambuilding retreat. A sneak peek aired on May 31, 2015. Malika Haqq, a main cast member, noted that she and her twin sister Khadijah had served as co-managers before the series. She stated that Khloé and Kourtney asked them to help, needing someone they could trust, and that working in the store always resembled a television show due to its environment and famous owners. Kim Kardashian disclosed that she initially wanted Keeping Up with the Kardashians to focus more on their stores to draw attention.
Reception
Amy Amatangelo of The Hollywood Reporter described the show as unoriginal, stating that viewers have seen everything before and noting strong resemblance to other reality series such as The Real Housewives, The Real World, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She also pointed out staged conversations, conflicts, and awkward product placement. Mark Perigard of the Boston Herald judged that the franchise may have hit bottom prior to the premiere.
Broadcast
The show premiered on September 20, 2015, on E! at 9/8pm ET/PT, following a new episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and continued airing Sundays in the same timeslot. The eight-episode season concluded on November 8, 2015. Internationally, the series premiered in Australia on September 22 and in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2015. Episodes are available on streaming services including Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play, and Microsoft Movies & TV.
