Production
On July 5, 2017, Facebook greenlit a then-untitled reality show starring the Ball family, with episode count and length not yet determined. The show was renewed for a second season on October 17, 2017, and for a third season on May 14, 2018. Facebook internally classifies the series as one of its "hero shows," alongside programs such as Strangers and Returning the Favor. The theme song, "Big Bag" by Wes Period, was originally intended for end credits but was made the official theme by producers after Period's friend, working with the Ball family on music, brought the song to them.
Reception
The first season received generally positive reviews from critics. Haley O'Shaughnessy of The Ringer noted that the show "combines everything you'd expect with a touch of nuance and sympathy." Myron Medcalf of ESPN compared it favorably to Keeping Up with the Kardashians, stating that unlike the Kardashians, Ball in the Family tries to be sympathetic to LaVar Ball while showing his brashness is not solely for generating social media buzz. The premiere episode was viewed by more than 26 million people.
