Plot

On 24 May 2025, robots abducted Belinda Chandra and crowned her queen of a planet called Missbelindachandra One. This world orbits a star named Miss Belinda Chandra, a name given by her ex-boyfriend Alan seventeen years earlier. While aboard the spaceship, Belinda openly blamed Alan for her kidnapping. The planet's inhabitants, known as the Missbelindachandrakind, include both humanoids and robots who once lived peacefully until the robots seized control, prompting some humans to rebel. The robots answer to the Great AI Generator, which intends to merge with Belinda. The Doctor, who had been chasing Belinda, arrived on the planet six months before she did and has since worked as its historian. By exploiting a glitch that makes robots unable to hear every ninth word, the Doctor and the rebels managed to rescue Belinda, though several rebels died, including their leader Sasha 55. The Doctor noticed that the robots also possess a copy of Belinda's star-naming certificate, but theirs is 5,000 years older. How they obtained it remains unexplained. Belinda then allowed herself to be recaptured, asking the robots to spare the rebels. She and the Doctor were taken to the Great AI Generator, which turned out not to be artificial intelligence at all but Alan himself. He had been captured by the robots ten years earlier after Belinda blamed him. Seeing life on Missbelindachandra One as a game, Alan merged with the machines and started the war because Belinda had ended their relationship due to his controlling behavior. Using every ninth word, Alan communicated that he was in pain. Belinda pressed her certificate against Alan's, causing both to experience all of time at once. The Doctor rescued Belinda while Alan reverted to a sperm and egg, which a robot cleaned up. Freed from conflict, the humanoids and robots began rebuilding their society. The Doctor then took Belinda to his TARDIS for time travel, mentioning he had met her distant descendant Mundy Flynn. Belinda demanded to go home, but the TARDIS could not return to 24 May 2025, so she had to travel with the Doctor until it could. As the TARDIS dematerialised, debris from several Earth landmarks and the certificate floated in space, and a calendar turned to 24 May 2025.

Production

Russell T Davies first imagined "The Robot Revolution" as a standalone story before reshaping it into a season opener designed to introduce a new companion. He found the writing process challenging, as he had to expand a joke about naming a star after someone into a full script. Davies also saw the episode as a broader commentary on real-world anxieties about artificial intelligence. The story touches on incel culture through a line where Belinda calls the planet "Planet of the Incels." Varada Sethu, who plays Belinda, noted that the production team discussed this topic, and she and co-star Ncuti Gatwa found it interesting to approach the subject from a compassionate perspective. A scene showing Belinda's roommates was not in the original script; Davies added it months after the initial production block ended because he thought it was unrealistic for a young working nurse to afford a large house alone. The episode stars Gatwa as the fifteenth Doctor and introduces Sethu as his companion, Belinda Chandra. Sethu had previously played a different character, Mundy Flynn, in the fourteenth series episode "Boom" (2024). In "The Robot Revolution," it is revealed that Mundy is a distant descendant of Belinda. Anita Dobson returns as Mrs. Flood, a mysterious character first seen in "The Church on Ruby Road" (2023) and later in the previous series. The antagonist, Alan Budd, is played by Jonny Green, who previously voiced characters in Doctor Who and Torchwood audio dramas. The guest cast includes Max Parker, Jeff Kunjumon, Evelyn Miller, and Caleb Hughes as Manny, Stefan, Sasha, and Scoley. Two robots were operated by puppeteers Stephen Love and Robert Strange, who had previously worked as Wrarth Warriors in "The Star Beast" (2023), with Strange also handling the Bogeyman costume in the 2024 episode "Space Babies."

Broadcast and reception

A press screening for the episode "The Robot Revolution" took place on 31 March 2025. It launched simultaneously on BBC iPlayer at 8 a.m. BST in the UK and on Disney+ in the US at 12 a.m. PDT on 12 April, with a BBC One broadcast later that day at 6:50 p.m. BST. Disney managed international distribution. Overnight figures estimated 2 million viewers for the BBC One broadcast, making it the second most-watched programme on BBC One that night, behind the Gladiators series 2 finale, and the fourth most-watched programme of the day. Over seven days, consolidated viewership reached 3.56 million, and over 28 days, it totalled 4.34 million.

Will Salmon of GamesRadar+ praised the episode's setting and design but found it "light" in plot and weight, with confusing plot points near the end. Stefan Mohamed, writing for Den of Geek, commended the Doctor's characterisation and the new visual and directorial techniques, but criticised the death of Sasha 55 as a weak narrative moment and Alan's antagonistic role. Roxy Simmons of Yahoo! Entertainment considered the episode enjoyable but felt it made little audience impact, also deeming its social commentary unsubtle. Ed Power of The Independent appreciated the Doctor's characterisation and the episode's fun nature, but thought Alan's "nerdy" characterisation would receive negative feedback and that Sasha 55's death was unnecessary. Robert Anderson of IGN criticised the episode as "shallow" and disliked the plot twist revealing Alan as the AI Generator. Jack Seale of The Guardian highlighted the re-introduction of the Doctor and the inclusion of topical issues, but criticised the AI Generator twists and the execution of the episode's message. Michael Hogan of The Daily Telegraph noted that some social commentary on gender and artificial intelligence was poorly executed and felt jarring for the time slot. Chris Taylor of Mashable, in a negative review, commented that the social commentary moved too fast to properly critique any single aspect.
