Plot
The story of Un-Go takes place in a future Japan that has become a dystopia. Following an unnamed war and terrorist attacks that struck the mainland, the government responded by removing Article 9 from the constitution and deploying its self-defense forces. After a period of conflict, an uneasy peace settled over the country. To prevent further terrorism, the government enacted the Information Privacy and Protection Act, which placed tech executive Rinroku Kaishou in charge of a massive surveillance system. This network can pull data from nearly any connected device, and Kaishou uses it to fight crime. The main characters are detective Shinjūrō Yuki and his supernatural partner Inga. Publicly, Shinjūrō is ridiculed as "The Defeated Detective" because he seems to arrive at crime scenes too late and draw incorrect conclusions, especially compared to the heroic Kaishou. In reality, Kaishou or the Public Prosecutors Office often calls on Shinjūrō for sensitive cases that require discretion. Using his own deductive reasoning and Inga’s special power, Shinjūrō uncovers the real truth, even when Kaishou twists the findings to create a comforting story for a war-weary public. Before the series begins, Shinjūrō was dying when his blood revived Inga, who then brought him back to life. They made a pact: Inga will not kill anyone, and Shinjūrō will provide her with souls to consume. In the prequel movie, Kaishou gives Shinjūrō a new identity after his original one was lost during the chaos in Tokyo.
