Making and release
Showrunner Russell T Davies wrote the episode, initially pitching the idea to Steven Moffat in April 2010 for the sixth series.[3] The episode was scrapped at that time due to budget constraints for the required visual effects.[3] Dylan Holmes Williams directed the episode, which was the second episode of the fourteenth series to be produced.[4] The slug creatures were created by Millennium FX and needed a crew of three to operate them during production.[5]
In the United Kingdom, the episode debuted on BBC iPlayer on 1 June 2024, and was shown on BBC One later that same day.[6] On 31 May 2024, Disney+ made the episode available in the United States at the same time.[6]
What the cited sources add
Salmon noted that the episode's virtual aspect recalled pandemic-era projects like Rob Savage's horror thriller Host.[2] Salmon also stated that the episode's tone was "Black Mirror for kids" and compared it to the David Tennant episode "Gridlock"[2] Mohamed reported that Davies described the episode to Doctor Who Magazine as a "step into Black Mirror territory"[7]
