The A.V. Club's 2010 review gave the episode a "B" grade, calling Picard's piloting of the Enterprise out of the debris field the best part.[5][6] ScreenRant in 2020 described the episode as frightening, noting it ends in "nail-biting, spectacular fashion" with one of Picard's best moments.[7][8] For Tor.com, Keith DeCandido scored the episode 4 out of 10, pointing out the unsettling nature of LaForge developing romantic feelings for a computer simulation.[9] In a 2014 ranking by io9, "Booby Trap" was listed as the 90th best Star Trek episode among more than 700 episodes from all series.[10][11]
