NerveGear
The helmet that put 10,000 players inside Sword Art Online, and would not let them out.
The NerveGear is the full-dive helmet of Sword Art Online. It stimulates the wearer's five senses through the brain, so a player controls an in-game character with the mind alone. Both the headset and the game were made by Akihiko Kayaba.
Lore & Background
When the game launched on 6 November 2022, the 10,000 players who logged in found they could not log out. Kayaba announced that in-game death, or forced removal of the headset, would kill the wearer. After the game was finally cleared, 300 players, Asuna among them, stayed trapped inside their NerveGear units, which led Kazuto to ALfheim Online. The later AmuSphere and the Soul Translator used by RATH are its successors.
