The game engine under every virtual world in Sword Art Online.
The Cardinal system is the engine on which the series' virtual worlds run. Akihiko Kayaba wrote it for Sword Art Online, and it was later duplicated for ALfheim Online.
Lore & Background
A consolidated package of the engine, the World Seed, was later handed to Kirito, who leaked it online to bring the virtual reality industry back to life; Gun Gale Online and the other worlds that followed grew from it. Inside SAO, Cardinal is also the authority that nearly erased the AI Yui before Kirito saved her data, and in the Underworld a copy of it appears as the character Cardinal who helps Kirito and Eugeo.
