Background

Created to give the first season a story arc, the demon tracks Sam in the episode "Scarecrow", meeting him while he hitchhikes and again at a bus station, and slits a man's throat to use his blood to speak with her father Azazel, the demon responsible for the death of the brothers' mother. She later kills the brothers' friends to force them to give up the demon-killing Colt and takes John Winchester hostage, until she is captured and exorcised to Hell in the season finale "Devil's Trap".

In the second season she escapes Hell and possesses Sam in "Born Under a Bad Sign", kills a fellow hunter with his body and takes Jo Harvelle hostage, until Dean and Bobby Singer burn off her binding mark and she has to flee Sam's body. In the fifth season she leaves Bobby paralyzed, sets a pack of hellhounds on the hunters in "Abandon All Hope...", which ends in the deaths of Jo and Ellen Harvelle, and guards the captured angel Castiel until he escapes by pushing her onto the burning circle that held him.

After Lucifer is sent back to Hell, the demon Crowley takes over and Meg hides as a Lucifer loyalist, becoming an uneasy ally of the Winchesters; she even takes a job at the mental hospital where the insane Castiel is left, to watch over him. Meg helps the Winchesters kill Dick Roman, the leader of the Leviathans, by attacking his headquarters to distract his forces. Crowley has her captured immediately afterwards and tortures her for the location of Lucifer's crypt, and in the eighth season episode "Goodbye Stranger" sacrifices herself so that Sam, Dean and Castiel can escape with a Word of God tablet.

Nicki Aycox plays her in the first season, Jared Padalecki while she possesses Sam, and Rachel Miner from the fifth season on. In season 15 the Shadow, ruler of the Empty, takes on Meg's form to talk to Castiel and greets him with her familiar "Hello, Clarence".
