Background

His lack of regard for humanity puts him at odds with Sam and Dean Winchester and with his fellow angels Anna Milton and Castiel. He debuts in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester", sent to help Castiel by destroying a town to make sure a witch dies before she can break one of the 66 seals on Lucifer's prison by summoning the demon Samhain. Castiel overrules him, and at the end of the episode Uriel threatens to kill Sam for using his demonic powers.

Uriel and Castiel are ordered to kill Anna, who has fallen and been reborn as a human, since falling is a serious crime punishable by death among angels. Uriel holds her angelic grace and refuses to give it back, and threatens Dean in a dream, but Dean tricks the angels into a confrontation with demons, and Anna steals back her grace while Uriel is busy killing demons.

In "On the Head of a Pin", now in charge of the demoted Castiel, Uriel forces Dean to torture the demon Alastair and then secretly frees him. He later admits to Castiel that he has been converting angels to serve Lucifer and that the slain angels were the ones who refused. When Castiel will not join him they fight, and Anna kills Uriel by stabbing him through the throat with his own angel blade.

In the fifth season episode "The Song Remains the Same", an earlier Uriel played by Matt Ward is summoned by a future Anna to help kill John and Mary Winchester, until the archangel Michael intervenes. Critics praised Wisdom for his portrayal.
