Background

She was introduced in the second season to explore a mother-daughter relationship in the hunting world. Jo first meets Sam and Dean Winchester in "Everybody Loves a Clown", when they come looking for her mother Ellen at Harvelle's Roadhouse, a saloon frequented by hunters. She seems to have romantic feelings for Dean, who thinks of her more like a sister.

Wanting to be a hunter like her late father Bill, she slips away against her mother's wishes to help the brothers on a hunt in "No Exit", and they have to rescue her from a vengeful spirit. When Ellen reveals that John Winchester's recklessness caused Bill's death, Jo's friendship with the brothers is strained, and she soon leaves the Roadhouse to live as a hunter. In "Born Under a Bad Sign" the demon possessing Sam captures her and plays cruel mind games with her before Dean rescues her.

Jo returns in the fifth season, first with Ellen in the town of River Pass, where War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has turned the townspeople against each other. In "Abandon All Hope..." she is fatally injured while saving Dean from hellhounds, and convinces the others to build a bomb and use her as bait; she dies in Ellen's arms before the building is blown up.

Kripke admitted that the conception of the character was flawed from the beginning, and she was removed by the end of the second season. She returns in the seventh season episode "Defending Your Life" as a ghostly witness called by the Egyptian god Osiris to judge Dean, and testifies that Dean was not responsible for her fate.
