Background
He first appears in the fourth season episode "It's a Terrible Life", pushing Dean to keep trying to stop demons from freeing Lucifer, and warns the prophet Chuck Shurley not to alert the brothers about his vision. In the finale "Lucifer Rising" he explains that the angels have been running Heaven in God's absence and will let Lucifer go free, because paradise on Earth can only come from defeating him in the apocalypse. He imprisons Dean until Castiel rescues him.
In the fifth season he tells Dean he is destined to be Michael's vessel and, when Dean refuses, tortures the brothers with diseases. In "The End" he sends Dean to an apocalyptic future in which Lucifer controls the planet using Sam as his vessel, and in "Dark Side of the Moon" he tortures the brothers in Heaven after they are killed, until God has his emissary Joshua restore their lives.
Michael gives Zachariah one final chance in "Point of No Return". He resurrects the brothers' half-brother Adam as bait and tortures Sam and Adam until Dean agrees to host Michael; Dean then demands Zachariah's death as one of his conditions, and once the angel is close enough, stabs him through the head with an angel blade.
Kurt Fuller returned in the 300th episode "Lebanon" as the Zachariah of an alternate timeline, and in season 13 an alternate reality version is played by Chad Rook. Critics received the character well, noting his sinister humor.
