Its existence is tied directly to Eleven's psychokinetic abilities; she inadvertently created the first breach while escaping captivity. This connection allows it to sense fear and locate victims through emotional distress. The entity serves as a physical manifestation of the dark energy leaking into Hawkins, acting as a scout for further invasion. Its defeat required closing the gate permanently, severing its link to our world.
