After being institutionalized at Hawkins National Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Martin Brenner, Henry was designated as 'One.' He manipulated a group of young test subjects to help him kill the staff, only to be betrayed by Brenner and another child, Eleven, who stripped him of his powers and banished him into a dimension that would become known as the Upside Down. There, he fused with the Mind Flayer, becoming the spider-like entity Vecna.

In Their Own Story

The silence in the Creel house was heavy, broken only by the ticking of a grandfather clock. Henry stood over his parents, not with rage, but with a cold, clinical detachment. He didn't hear their screams; he heard the universe correcting itself. As the shadows lengthened and twisted into something ancient, he felt the pull of a new world opening beneath the floorboards, a place where his vision could finally become reality.

The narrative begins in the 1950s, introducing young Henry as an outcast who perceives a dark truth about humanity. His arc accelerates when he murders his family and is sent to Hawkins Lab. There, he manipulates other children to eliminate staff members, aiming for freedom. However, Eleven intervenes during the massacre, using her powers to strip Henry of his abilities and banish him into the Upside Down. This act transforms the dimension and creates Vecna. The story culminates in the present day as Vecna seeks revenge on Eleven and aims to merge the two worlds.
