Meanwhile, Mike Wheeler hides the mysterious girl, Eleven, in his basement after she helps them locate Will's spirit. The boys realize their game might be real as they encounter a creature that kills a lab technician and abducts Will into the Upside Down. Joyce begins to experience strange phenomena, including flickering Christmas lights and phone calls from a disconnected line, which she interprets as signs of life. The climax occurs when Hopper breaks into Hawkins National Laboratory, discovering the existence of the alternate dimension and Eleven's role in opening it.
