In our world, its passage leaves a visceral trail of translucent slime and decaying spores. It tears temporary rifts through walls or uses existing gates to traverse dimensions, preferring the cover of darkness in Hawkins before retreating to the dark realm. Unlike later threats that cause instant plant withering, the Season 1 Demogorgon leaves behind its signature slimy residue rather than dead foliage.

Reader's Guide

It begins with a bicycle abandoned in the woods. When Will Byers vanishes on his way home, Hawkins descends into panic, coinciding with the escape of Eleven from a nearby government lab. Strange phenomena plague the town—flickering lights, possessed animals—as a shadowy predator stalks the perimeter. Mike Wheeler and his friends discover Will is alive but trapped in the Upside Down, hunted by a beast they name 'Demogorgon' after their Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The creature, unleashed by psychic experiments at Hawkins Lab, hunts specifically for blood and vibration. At the winter carnival climax, Eleven lures the monster into the school gymnasium. She uses fire as both bait and weapon; the resulting explosion destroys the immediate threat and rescues Will, but costs Eleven her freedom, leaving her trapped in the Upside Down.
