Lore & Background
In 2318 the Cardassian Union invaded Bajor and occupied it for fifty years, forcing many Bajorans into slave labour in its mines. The Federation did not step in, treating it as an internal Cardassian matter under the Prime Directive.
In 2369 the Cardassians withdrew, and Bajor's provisional government invited the Federation to run the former Cardassian station Terok Nor, renamed Deep Space Nine. Benjamin Sisko was told to prepare Bajor for Federation membership.
