Five-Year Mission
Starfleet's five-year voyages of deep space exploration.
A five-year mission in Star Trek is an assignment of deep space exploration into uncharted space given to Starfleet starships, mainly in the 23rd century. The best known, called one of the greatest chapters in Starfleet history, was the USS Enterprise's five-year mission from 2265 to 2270 under Captain James T. Kirk, whose opening narration sets out its aims: "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations". Others include the USS Constellation's missions under Commodore Matthew Decker from 2245 and Captain Nyota Uhura's to the Lesser Magellanic Cloud from 2301 to 2305; by 3189 Starfleet had abandoned five-year missions.
