Gameplay

Grimms Notes is a side-scrolling role-playing game where the player controls a party of characters based on fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. The player directly moves the main character and attacks enemies, while the game controls other party members. Defeating enemies charges a skill meter, allowing the player to activate each character's unique skill. A Soul System lets each character equip two souls, functioning as jobs or classes that can be changed between battles.

Release

The game launched in Japan on January 21, 2016 for Android and iOS. It was released worldwide on March 2, 2018 in South Korea, China, North America and Europe by Flero Games. The global version shut down on January 10, 2019. The Japanese version closed on June 17, 2020, after a planned April 30, 2020 shutdown was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A free offline application later made every cutscene available without gameplay, effectively turning it into a visual novel.

Other media

In 2018, Square Enix confirmed that an anime adaptation of Grimms Notes would be a full-length series rather than a short-form one. Titled Grimms Notes: The Animation, it aired on TBS and BS-TBS from January 10 to March 28, 2019. Brain's Base handled animation, with Seiki Sugawara directing, Hiroshi Yamaguchi on series composition, Kentaro Matsumoto designing characters, and Fumiyuki Go directing sound. Ayana Taketatsu sang the opener "Innocent Notes," while i☆Ris performed the closer "Endless Notes." Crunchyroll simulcast the series in North America, and Sentai Filmworks later released it on home video.
