Gameplay
The control and battle system largely follows that of the earlier Chaos Rings titles. Genes are replaced by Sopia, and alongside the Break Gauge a new Charge Gauge appears. Filling the Charge Gauge by attacking or taking damage enables more powerful attacks called Awakenings. Characters gain an Element immediately by equipping another character's Sopia, rather than through magical attacks or items. New abilities join those from previous games, and Sopia can be upgraded with SP earned in battle to unlock further abilities. Unlike earlier installments, both characters cannot equip the same Sopia at once. The player character frequently switches after completing objectives, and the partner changes at certain points, each partner having different abilities and attributes. Branching story paths unlock as the player progresses, similar to the original Chaos Rings. Outside battle, characters can use abilities to cross obstacles and destroy barriers; the ability type depends on the current party, and party members can be changed from the central hub to access previously unreachable areas. As the story advances, the player gains Ophanim creatures that can be summoned using the Advent pair command. The power and element of the Ophanim's attack depend on how full the Charge Gauge is when Advent is used. The central setting is a large, floating space vessel called The All-Seeing Eye, a satellite in orbit above Earth, while almost all dungeons are on a time-frozen Earth.
Plot
The world is in danger. A being called the Destroyer has awakened deep within the Earth, triggering earthquakes and cataclysms while unleashing monsters. If it reaches its final phase, it will wipe out the planet and every living thing. To prevent this, the Creator selects one person to act as the Nominator and five others to serve as Pillars. These Pillars must be people close to the Nominator. They are sacrificed, and the energy from their deaths seals the Destroyer until it inevitably awakens again, forcing the ritual to repeat. The story unfolds during the 1,685th time this rite is performed. The original Nominator, Orlando, is turned into a Pillar for reasons that are not explained, and his close friend Darwin kills him. Darwin is then forced to take over as the Nominator and complete the rite by sacrificing the remaining Pillars. Among those he must give up is Marie, his childhood friend and Orlando’s half-sister. Two figures watch over the proceedings: a mysterious man named Bachs and a strange girl named Lessica. Darwin, the main character, is an orphan raised by Orlando who later joined the Ornian Guard, the same group Orlando served in. He was originally called to be the first Pillar, but a mistake led to Orlando being sacrificed instead, making Darwin the Nominator. Marie is Orlando’s half-sister and Darwin’s love interest. Orlando, a lieutenant in the Ornian Guard and a father figure to Darwin, was meant to be the Nominator but ended up as the first Pillar. The other Pillars include a swordsman who once fought Orlando to a draw and now wants a rematch, a wealthy young boy terrified of dying, and a woman who met Orlando in battle and is the mother of his son. Lessica was created by Amon to oversee the rite and assist the Nominator and Pillars. The Destroyer, named Neron, is later revealed to be the true creator, as his power is what brought humans into existence.
