Gameplay and setting

The player controls Chris Eriksen, a young boy living in Beaver Creek, Oregon with his father Charles, who is grieving the death of Chris's mother. On a Saturday morning, Chris adopts the superhero persona Captain Spirit, projecting his imagination onto reality and viewing chores as supervillains to defeat. After an argument with his father, Chris falls from his treehouse but mysteriously levitates, and two boys watching from afar appear in Life Is Strange 2. The costume is customisable, the environment contains quests such as treasure hunting and exploring an imagined planet, and dialogue trees allow responses to non-player characters. Player choices affect parts of Life Is Strange 2.

Development and release

Dontnod Entertainment built this game as a way to grow the Life Is Strange world, a concept that came up while they were making Life Is Strange 2. Raoul Barbet and Michel Koch, the co-directors, teamed up with writers Christian Divine and Jean-Luc Cano to craft the story and its characters. They studied the setting by considering what the main character's father could pay for, including the details of his job. The studio used this project to test new ideas from the Life Is Strange series, making dialogue trees better so players could answer while still moving around. Using Unreal Engine 4, they created a fresh system for facial expressions and physics, and designed all-new assets. Barbet noted that the Japanese anime Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya were inspirations. The song "Death with Dignity" by Sufjan Stevens was chosen to capture the feeling of loss. The game was first shown at Microsoft's E3 2018 event with a planned release of June 26, but it actually came out on June 25. A Japanese version with localization and dubbing arrived on February 6, 2020.

Reception

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit earned mostly positive reviews on Metacritic. Critics highlighted the story; Destructoid's Brett Makedonski found it compelling, while Game Informer's Joe Juba liked how Chris's imagination mirrored real life. Game Revolution's Michael Leri enjoyed playing as Captain Spirit, saying the character brightened ordinary interactions. GameSpot's James O'Connor called Chris a sympathetic protagonist, praised the inventive cutscenes, and described the script as tight and the storytelling as smart. GamesRadar+'s Andy Hartup appreciated the free price tag, agreed the script was concise, and noted the game's charm and genuine human drama. IGN's Louisa Blatt found the father-son relationship emotionally rewarding and never got bored, calling the setting the most beautiful scenery in any Life is Strange game. VideoGamer.com's Adam Cook said the game succeeds as a teaser for Life is Strange 2, citing its length as a strength. On the other hand, Makedonski disliked the gratuitous cliffhanger ending. Juba felt the weakest parts used standard adventure game mechanics. Leri criticized the writing for extreme tonal shifts and mediocre dialogue. O'Connor found the characters clichéd. Hartup said the game was too short. Blatt was frustrated by the main mechanic and found the quests unchallenging. Cook questioned the writing's subtlety. The game received nominations for "Game, Franchise Adventure" at the NAVGTR Awards and the "Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award" at the SXSW Gaming Awards.
