Story

In Chaos Rings III, the story unfolds in a world where adventurers gather in the coastal city of Neo Paleo, seeking to become Explorers so they can journey to the heavens, specifically the planet Marble Blue. The narrative focuses on various characters and their personal motivations for making this pilgrimage. The main character, Nazca, is driven by a dream to discover Paradise, the greatest mystery of Marble Blue. Another key figure, Leary, believes her father has been kidnapped and taken to Marble Blue by an unknown person, and she travels there to find him. As the story progresses, the hero uncovers the true nature of Paradise and the origins of Marble Blue. The game features five playable characters. Unlike earlier entries in the series, parties can now include up to three members, and the two characters not in the active party still earn experience, though at a reduced rate. Voice acting appears in important scenes, but only in Japanese. The protagonist is named by the player at the start, though the official website refers to him as Nazca. His father, an explorer, vanished while searching for Paradise, and his mother died from grief after hearing the news. Nazca was raised alongside his younger sister by their neighbor, Dorothy. At age 16, he aspires to become an Explorer and fulfill his father's dream. Leary joins Nazca during his license trial to become an Explorer and becomes a teammate. She wants to find her father, who was abducted by a criminal named Shyamalan. Another companion, who also takes the license trial with Nazca, seeks a gift that can cure his mother's fatal illness. Alfred, a Rank III Explorer who serves as an examiner for the license trial, later joins Nazca's group. Additionally, the daughter of Mariv becomes part of Nazca's journey.

Development

Chaos Rings III was revealed on August 4, 2014, with a Japanese launch set for October 8, 2014. It was announced for iOS and Android, continuing the series' tradition, but also marked the first entry to appear on the PlayStation Vita. The Vita version, called Chaos Rings III: Prequel Trilogy, bundles all four mainline games: Chaos Rings, Chaos Rings Omega, Chaos Rings II, and the third title. This release is a proper port, not a PlayStation Mobile version like the original Chaos Rings. A special edition includes an art book featuring work by Final Fantasy artist Yusuke Naora, a CD of twelve remastered tracks from Noriyasu Agematsu (composer for Chaos Rings and Wild Arms), and a code for crossover content in Diffusion Million Arthur, another Square Enix Vita title. The game was playable at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2014. Its creators estimated over 50 hours of gameplay. The English version for iOS and Android arrived on May 28, 2015.
