Development
Square Enix first teased the game in October 2016, hinting at a celebration for the four-year anniversary of the original Bravely Default's 2012 Japanese release. The following month, Bravely Default: Fairy's Effect was officially announced as a mobile phone role-playing game developed by Silicon Studio and published by Square Enix, with Claytechworks later reported to have contributed. It was the second mobile spinoff for the series after Bravely Default: D's Report. A closed beta test was scheduled before the 2017 launch, and early screenshots showed graphics similar to the Nintendo 3DS entries but without stereoscopic 3D. The game was revealed to be a streamlined, simplified mobile variant rather than a traditional JRPG. It launched in Japan in March 2017 and ran until August 31, 2020, when Square Enix cited difficulty in providing sufficient service as the reason for shutdown. The game never released outside Japan.
Reception and impact
Although never released outside Japan, the game drew commentary from Western publications. Some noted that fans might lament the series' move to mobile phones after other Square Enix franchises had poorly received transitions, while others were hopeful because the main development team worked on the spinoff and its success could fund future mainline entries. The latter proved accurate: Fairy's Effect's quick financial success in Japan led to the development of Bravely Default II in 2021. In 2020, series producer Asano explained that the game was titled Bravely Default II despite being the third entry because he felt Bravely Second had parts that did not meet fan expectations. He initially thought continuing the series would be difficult, but the team's success with Fairy's Effect and Octopath Traveler inspired them to revisit the series and plan another entry.
