Series synopsis

The story follows two teenage cousins, Jessie, a studious virgin, and Maya, a troubled runaway, who both fall in love with Jacob, a popular football player. Their love triangle forces them to confront issues such as social pressure, drugs, pregnancy, betrayal, and sex, with consequences that will affect their lives. Ceci and Vanessa, two popular students and school bullies, intimidate girls at East Los but face life-changing repercussions from their own sexual partners. When Ceci and Jacob return as coaches, a new generation of students risks everything for love. The second semester sees Camilla struggling with inner demons as someone from her past returns, Gina grows closer to Eddie, a student with a difficult home life, and Ceci's home troubles become more dangerous. Diego's betrayal continues to affect Tiffany, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity tests Maya and Jacob's love. Summer brings competition on and off the dancefloor, with lies, secrets, betrayals, and sexting causing heartache. Nearly a year later, the remaining seniors of the bomb squad face life-changing opportunities that could take them away from East Los altogether.

Reception

Hulu reported that East Los High was among the top ten television series on the streaming service during its premiere month and attracted one million unique visitors monthly to its Hulu Latino page since 2013. Aymar Jean Christian of IndieWire called it one of Hulu's most popular original series and praised it as a well-produced drama for diverse communities. Manuel Betancourt of Remezcla described it as a beloved teen drama. Kayla Cobb of Decider recommended it as a binge-worthy high school drama, and Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media gave it three out of five stars, noting its positive messages and role models.
