Premise
In 2019, siblings Eva and Ruben discover a time machine in their grandfather's laboratory and accidentally travel back to 1957. While trying to remain unnoticed, Eva falls in love with JJ, an Italian lighting technician for a dance show called Club 57. She befriends the show's lead performer, Amelia, and draws the hostility of JJ's ex-girlfriend, Vero. Choosing to stay in the past, Eva prolongs their visit, while Ruben begins selling his modern technology to their grandfather, who is in his twenties. Their presence attracts the Guardians of Time, interdimensional agents who send apprentice guardian Aurek and his robotic assistant Droide to capture them. Eva and Ruben eventually return to 2019, only to find their actions have altered the present: their parents are separated and their grandfather is a spiteful millionaire. They go back to the past to undo the changes and restore their original lives.
Development
Rainbow SpA and Nickelodeon, both part of Viacom, had previously collaborated on new episodes of Winx Club starting in 2010. At a 2017 meeting, Nickelodeon executives presented Rainbow founder Iginio Straffi with potential co-productions, including a pilot for Club 57 filmed at Viacom's Miami studio in 2016. Rainbow discussed financial support with RAI, and in December 2017 Nickelodeon greenlit a full season of 75 episodes, later reduced to 60. At Rainbow's direction, creator Catharina Ledoboer rewrote the original outline to make JJ a 1950s Italian immigrant, a change Nickelodeon's Tatiana Rodriguez said gave the script greater depth. Ledoboer noted that Rainbow influenced the cast, writing, and songs to appeal to European audiences. Filming began on 24 September 2018 in Monopoli, Apulia, with exterior shots in Martina Franca. Production moved to Viacom's Miami studio and lasted six months, involving an international cast from the United States, Latin America, and Italy. Over 2,700 minutes of footage were shot across 118 days. Straffi described the multilingual cast's chemistry as experiment number one accomplished. Evaluna Montaner was cast as Eva after her father received a tip; the character was originally named Luca but renamed Eva after Montaner got the part. Montaner sang in Spanish and Italian, with music composed by her father Ricardo Montaner, brothers Mau and Ricky Montaner, and fiancé Camilo Echeverry.
Reception
When Club 57 aired on Viacom's Telefe, it was the top show in its time slot from May through July 2019, drawing 17.8 million viewers. According to IBOPE Media, the Nickelodeon broadcast was number one with kids aged 4 to 11 in Argentina and Mexico, and second in Brazil and Colombia. The series earned a nomination for best live-action/hybrid TV series at the 2019 Pulcinella Awards in Italy. That same year, it was up for Favorite TV Show at the Kids' Choice Awards Mexico, with Evaluna Montaner nominated for Favorite Actress and Riccardo Frascari and Sebastián Silva for Favorite Actor.
