Overview

Each season of American Crime follows a different story. The first unfolds in Modesto, California, after a war veteran is attacked during a home invasion, linking four people to the event. The second moves to Indianapolis, Indiana, where two private school basketball co-captains face accusations of sexually assaulting a male classmate and sharing photos online. The third is set in Alamance County, North Carolina, following five people struggling to survive in a place where the American Dream is costly.

Production

In October 2013, ABC announced it was developing a drama pilot created by John Ridley, and in January 2014 the pilot was greenlit. Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman were later cast in lead roles. The pilot and further episodes were filmed in Austin, Texas, which substitutes for Modesto. ABC picked up the series for the 2014–15 season on May 8, 2014. Filming moved to Los Angeles for the third season after the production received a California tax credit.
