Rosette Nebula

A rose-shaped H II region around a young star cluster.

The Rosette Nebula (Caldwell 49) is an H II region in Monoceros, around the open cluster NGC 2244 whose stars formed from it. Radiation from the young stars makes the gas glow.

The cluster and nebula are about 5,000 light-years away, about 130 light-years across, and the nebula holds roughly 10,000 solar masses.
