Tadpole Galaxy

A disrupted spiral galaxy with a long tail of stars.

The Tadpole Galaxy (UGC 10214, Arp 188) is a disrupted barred spiral galaxy about 143.6 Mpc away in Draco. Its long trail of stars stretches its diameter to about 171 kpc and is thought to come from a close encounter with a smaller intruder galaxy around 100 million years ago.

The tail is full of bright blue star clusters. Hubble imaged it in April 2002.
