The Mars rovers

Mars rovers are motorized vehicles operated remotely to explore the Martian surface. Unlike stationary landers, they can cover more ground, target specific geological features, reposition themselves to capture sunlight during winter, and help improve techniques for controlling robots over vast distances. They differ from orbiters, such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which survey the planet from above. A more recent addition to surface exploration is the Mars helicopter.

As of May 2021, six rovers have successfully operated on Mars. The first five were managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory: Sojourner (landed 1997), Spirit (2004–2010), Opportunity (2004–2018), Curiosity (2012–present), and Perseverance (2021–present). The sixth, Zhurong (2021–2022), was operated by the China National Space Administration.

By January 2016, NASA reported that Opportunity and Curiosity were investigating evidence of ancient life, including microbial ecosystems based on autotrophic, chemotrophic, or chemolithoautotrophic organisms, as well as ancient water environments like river or lake plains that could have supported life. Searching for signs of habitability, fossil preservation (taphonomy), and organic carbon became a key NASA goal.

Earlier Soviet probes, Mars 2 and Mars 3, were physically tethered to their landers. Sojourner relied on the Mars Pathfinder base station to communicate with Earth, while Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity operated independently. As of August 11, 2026, Curiosity remains active; Spirit, Opportunity, and Sojourner completed their missions before losing contact. Perseverance landed on February 18, 2021, and is still operational. On May 14, 2021, Zhurong became the first non-American rover to function on Mars.

It remains operational as of August 2026. - **Perseverance** (NASA) is based on Curiosity’s design. Launched July 30, 2020, it landed February 18, 2021, carrying the Mars helicopter Ingenuity. Ingenuity’s mission has ended, but Perseverance continues as of August 2026.

- **Sojourner** (Mars Pathfinder) landed July 4, 1997, and lost contact on September 27, 1997, after traveling just over 100 meters. - **Spirit** (MER-A) launched June 10, 2003, landed January 4, 2004. It traveled 7.73 km before its wheels became stuck in sand. Last contact was March 22, 2010; NASA ended recovery attempts on May 25, 2011. - **Opportunity** (MER-B) launched July 7, 2003, landed January 25, 2004. It set longevity records at 5,352 sols and covered 45.16 km. Its last signal came on June 10, 2018, during a global dust storm that blocked sunlight. NASA declared the mission complete on February 13, 2019. - **Zhurong** launched July 23, 2020, landed May 14, 2021, in Utopia Planitia, and deployed on May 22, 2021. Designed for 90 sols, it operated for 347 sols and traveled 1,921 meters. It deactivated on May 20, 2022, due to sandstorms and winter; dust buildup prevented reactivation. On April 25, 2023, mission designer Zhang Rongqiao stated the dust accumulation was greater than expected, suggesting the rover may be inactive permanently.

**Failed**

- **Mars 2** (PrOP-M rover, 1971) was destroyed when its lander crashed. - **Mars 3** (PrOP-M rover, 1971) landed successfully on December 2, 1971, but the lander stopped communicating about 110 seconds later, possibly due to a severe dust storm or relay issues with the orbiter. Both Soviet rovers weighed 4.5 kg and moved on skis, tethered to their landers.

**Planned**

- **Rosalind Franklin** (ESA’s ExoMars rover) was technically ready for launch in March 2022, with a planned September 2022 launch, but cooperation with Roscosmos was suspended, delaying it until at least 2028. Alternative launch options are being studied. - **ISRO** has proposed a rover for its second Mars mission, the Mars Lander Mission, planned for 2030.

**Proposed**

- **Mars Tumbleweed Rover** is a spherical, wind-propelled rover concept first studied by NASA in the early 2000s. Since 2017, Team Tumbleweed has developed prototypes, aiming to land a swarm of 90 such rovers on Mars by 2034.

- **Marsokhod** was proposed for Russia’s Mars 96 mission but never built.
