The Huygens probe separated from Cassini on December 25, 2004, using a Spin/Eject device that gave it a relative speed of 0.35 meters per second and a spin rate of 7.5 rpm. It landed on Titan by parachute on January 14, 2005, relaying data to Earth for about 90 minutes via the orbiter. This was the first landing ever in the outer Solar System and the first on a moon other than Earth’s.

Cassini directly supported about 500 work-years (10 percent of lab staff) and provided nearly 20 percent of the lab budget. To save $250 million, the scan platform was removed from the design. The mission was originally planned for four years (June 2004 to May 2008), but was extended twice: first as the Cassini Equinox Mission (until September 2010), then as the Cassini Solstice Mission (until September 15, 2017).
