Jet Moto
Futuristic hoverbike racing with magnetic grapples and suicide courses.
Last updated
Jet Moto is a series of futuristic racing games for the PlayStation video game console. The series began with Jet Moto in 1996, developed by SingleTrac, known for Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is notable for its hoverbikes that travel over land and water, and for introducing a magnetic grapple system and suicide course types.
Background
The Jet Moto series debuted with Jet Moto in 1996, developed by SingleTrac and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. The PlayStation version was released in North America on October 31, 1996, and in Europe in February 1997, and Japan on August 7, 1997. A PC version was planned but was cancelled before release. At launch, the game offered ten characters and four tracks, with more unlockable by winning tournaments.
Courses included beaches with debris-littered water, ice-covered mountains, and a floating track above a city. Jet Moto was seen as Sony's response to Nintendo's Wave Race 64. Reviews were mixed, with praise for the soundtrack and criticism of high difficulty. It became a PlayStation Greatest Hits title in August 1998.
Jet Moto 2
Jet Moto 2 was released in 1997, with twelve starting characters and two unlockable, and greatly increased track count including all original tracks. A disc mastering error produced a special edition, Jet Moto 2: Championship Edition, which had the same number of racers and no confirmed frame rate change; the error caused crashes. Difficulty was higher due to AI based on gameplay recordings. Dual Analog and DualShock controllers were supported, though without vibration feedback.
Jet Moto 3, developed by SingleTrac and published by 989 Studios, was released in North America only on August 24, 1999. It introduced stunt tracks, a hop button, and overhauled physics. It was later added to the PlayStation Network but removed shortly after.
Cancelled games
Two additional titles were cancelled. Jet Moto 2124 was in development at Sony's 989 Studio in San Diego, set in the future with locations off Earth including Mars, the moon, and Europa.
It was cancelled two years into production due to lack of marketing support, camera issues, flawed physics, and lackluster sales of Jet Moto 3. Jet Moto: SOLAR was a PlayStation 2 project by RedZone Interactive, cancelled in 2003. No screenshots or video were officially released until December 2022, when gameplay footage was uploaded to YouTube.
