Katey Sagal was born on January 19, 1954, in Los Angeles to a show business family. Her mother, Sara Zwilling, was a singer, producer, and television writer; her father, Boris Sagal, was a television director. She graduated from Palisades High School and attended the California Institute of the Arts until 1972. Her godfather was sitcom producer Norman Lear, who also introduced her parents. Sagal has described herself as 'culturally Jewish' with no formal religious experience.

Sagal began her career as a singer and songwriter, working as a backing vocalist for Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Tanya Tucker. She was a member of the Harlettes, Bette Midler's backup singers, and released two solo albums: Well... (1994) and Room (2004). Her acting breakthrough came as Peg Bundy on Married... with Children (1987–1997), for which she received three Golden Globe nominations. She later voiced Leela on Futurama (1999–2003, 2008–2013, 2023–present) and starred as Cate Hennessy on 8 Simple Rules (2002–2005).
