The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow, filter-feeding carpet shark and the biggest fish alive today. It is the sole living species in the genus Rhincodon and the only remaining member of the family Rhincodontidae, which falls under the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The largest reliably measured individual reached 18.8 meters (61.7 feet) long. This shark holds numerous size records in the animal kingdom, most notably as the largest living non-cetacean animal by a wide margin. Before 1984, it was classified as *Rhiniodon* in the family Rhinodontidae. An extinct relative, *Rhincodon ferriolensis*, has been described from the Late Burdigalian stage of Europe, likely in Spain.
As an active filter feeder, the whale shark mainly eats plankton, krill, fish eggs, and small schooling fish like sardines and anchovies. Its specialized sieve-like gill pads allow it to process over 6,000 liters of water per hour. This species is highly migratory, traveling thousands of miles across tropical oceans to take advantage of seasonal food sources. The species was first distinguished in April 1828 after a 4.6-meter (15-foot) specimen was harpooned in Table Bay, South Africa. Andrew Smith, a military doctor with British troops in Cape Town, described it the following year. The name "whale shark" comes from its appearance and large size; it is a fish, not a mammal, and like all sharks, is not closely related to whales.
**Evolution** The whale shark is one of the oldest shark species still alive today. The earliest known fossil teeth date from the Late Oligocene of South Carolina, USA. Their teeth become more widespread from the Early Miocene onward, with finds in other parts of the eastern United States, southern France, and Costa Rica.
**Description** Whale sharks have a broad, flattened head with a large mouth and two small eyes at the front corners. Unlike many other sharks, their mouth is at the front of the head, not underneath. A 12.1-meter (39.7-foot) individual had a mouth measuring 1.55 meters (5.1 feet) across. The mouth can contain over 300 rows of tiny teeth and 20 filter pads used for filter feeding. Spiracles sit just behind the eyes, and the shark has five large pairs of gills. Its skin is dark grey with a white belly, covered in a unique pattern of pale grey or white spots and stripes that differs for each individual. The skin can be up to 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) thick and is very hard and rough to the touch. Three prominent ridges run along each side, starting above and behind the head and ending at the caudal peduncle. The shark has two dorsal fins set far back on the body, a pair of pectoral fins, a pair of pelvic fins, and a single medial anal fin. The caudal fin has a larger upper lobe than the lower lobe (heterocercal).
Whale sharks have dermal denticles on the surface of their eyeballs that are structured differently from those on their body. These denticles, along with the ability to retract the eyes deep into their sockets, help protect the eyes from damage. Evidence suggests whale sharks can recover from major injuries and may regenerate small sections of their fins; their spot markings have been shown to reform over previously wounded areas. Rhodopsin, the light-sensing pigment in the rod cells of the retina, normally detects green light for dim-light vision. In the whale shark (and the bottom-dwelling cloudy catshark), two amino acid substitutions make the pigment more sensitive to blue light, which dominates the deep ocean. One of these mutations makes rhodopsin vulnerable to higher temperatures. In humans, a similar mutation causes congenital stationary night blindness because body temperature causes the pigment to decay. This pigment becomes unstable in shallow water, where temperatures are higher and full-spectrum light is present. To protect against this instability, the whale shark deactivates the pigment in shallow water (otherwise it would hinder full color vision). In the colder environment at 2,000 meters below the surface, it is reactivated. These mutations allow the shark to see well at both ends of its great vertical range. The eyes have also lost all cone opsins except LWS.
**Size** The whale shark is the largest non-cetacean animal in the world. Its maximum size and growth patterns are not well understood by scientists. Limited evidence, mostly from males, suggests sexual maturity occurs at around 8 to 9 meters (26 to 30 feet) in length, with females possibly maturing at a similar or larger size. Various studies have estimated growth and longevity by analyzing vertebral growth rings or measurements from re-sighted sharks over several years.
