The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second biggest shark and fish alive today, only smaller than the whale shark. Along with the whale shark and the megamouth shark, it is one of just three shark species that eat plankton. This slow-moving filter feeder gets its name because it often feeds near the surface, where it looks like it is basking in the warmer water. Although it is huge and looks intimidating, the basking shark is not aggressive and poses no danger to people.
Typically, these sharks grow to about 7.9 meters (26 feet) long, but some very large individuals have exceeded 10 meters (33 feet). They are usually greyish-brown with mottled skin and a white mouth interior. Their tail fin has a strong side keel and is crescent-shaped. Other names for them include bone shark, elephant shark, sailfish, and sunfish. They are found in temperate oceans all over the world and migrate seasonally. They can be seen alone or in small groups, and satellite tracking has shown they spend winter both on the continental shelf and in deeper waters.

The oldest known relatives of the basking shark belong to the extinct genus *Keasius*, dating to the middle Eocene in Antarctica and the Eocene in Oregon and possibly Russia. The modern genus *Cetorhinus* appeared during the Miocene, and the modern species itself appeared in the Late Miocene. A possible relative from the Late Triassic of Europe, *Pseudocetorhinus*, is not clearly linked to this family.
The basking shark lives in coastal and open-ocean waters worldwide, from boreal to warm-temperate regions. It stays near the continental shelf and sometimes enters brackish water. It can be found from the surface down to at least 910 meters (2,990 feet). It prefers water temperatures between 8 and 14.5°C (46.4 to 58.1°F) but has been confirmed crossing the much warmer equator. Historical reports from the late 1800s and early 1900s claimed sharks up to 12.5 or 14 meters (41 or 46 feet), but these are not well-supported. The largest well-documented specimen was 12.27 meters (40.3 feet) long, caught in a herring net in Canada’s Bay of Fundy in 1851, with an estimated weight of 16 tonnes (18 short tons). However, a growth study suggests individuals over about 10 meters (33 feet) are unlikely. It is the second-largest living fish, after the whale shark.
