Background
Running back Shaun Alexander, back from his divisional-round injury, rushed for a franchise playoff record 134 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Hasselbeck threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jerramy Stevens, Lofa Tatupu and Marquand Manuel intercepted Jake Delhomme to set up a Josh Brown field goal and Alexander's 1-yard touchdown, and Seattle led 17–0 early in the second quarter. Steve Smith's 59-yard punt return was Carolina's only first-half answer. It was Seattle's first conference championship game since 1983, when the franchise played in the AFC.
