Background
1983 was Chuck Knox's first season as Seattle's head coach. The Seahawks finished 9–7 and reached the playoffs for the first time, beating the Denver Broncos 31–7 in the Wild Card round and then the defending AFC champion Miami Dolphins 27–20 on the road. Seattle had beaten the Raiders twice during the regular season, but in the title game Los Angeles outgained them 405–197 in total yards, intercepted five passes and led 20–0 at halftime. Marcus Allen ran for 154 yards, while Curt Warner, the AFC's leading rusher that season, was held to 26 yards on 11 carries. After Dave Krieg's third interception he was replaced by Jim Zorn, who threw both Seattle touchdown passes, to Dan Doornink and Charle Young. It was the first postseason meeting between the two clubs.
