The Labrador Sea formed between 60 and 40 million years ago during the Paleocene, when the North American and Greenland tectonic plates separated, a process that also triggered volcanic eruptions of picrites and basalts in the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay. A sedimentary basin from the Cretaceous period lies buried beneath the present-day continental shelves. The sea reaches depths of about 3,400 meters and spans roughly 1,000 kilometers where it meets the Atlantic, shallowing to less than 700 meters toward Baffin Bay. Its bottom is carved by the Northwest Atlantic Mid-Ocean Channel (NAMOC), a vast turbidity current system about 2 to 5 kilometers wide and 3,800 kilometers long, resembling a submarine river with numerous tributaries. Water temperatures range from -1°C in winter to 5–6°C in summer, with low salinity between 31 and 34.9 parts per thousand. Two-thirds of the sea is ice-covered in winter, and tides are semi-diurnal, reaching 4 meters. An anticlockwise circulation dominates: the East Greenland Current and West Greenland Current bring warmer, saltier water northward along Greenland, while the Baffin Island Current and Labrador Current carry cold, less saline water southward along Canada, often laden with icebergs. The Labrador Current flows at 0.3–0.5 m/s, occasionally reaching 1 m/s. This sea is a major source of North Atlantic Deep Water, specifically the Labrador Sea Water layer, which is cold (3.3–3.4°C), relatively low in salinity (34.84–34.89 parts per thousand), high in oxygen, and remarkably homogeneous. Historically, between about 500 BC and 1300 AD, the southern coast hosted Dorset, Beothuk, and Inuit settlements, with the Dorset later replaced by Thule people.
