The Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortés or Vermilion Sea, is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean that separates the Baja California peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa. The gulf is recognized as one of the most ecologically diverse seas on Earth, hosting over 5,000 species of micro-invertebrates, and parts of it are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its complex geology, linked to plate tectonics, results in maximum depths exceeding those typical of marginal seas. The International Hydrographic Organization defines the gulf’s southern limit as a line from Piaxtla Point on the Mexican mainland to the southern tip of Baja California.
