The spiny seahorse (Hippocampus histrix), also called the thorny seahorse, is a small marine fish from the Indo-Pacific region, belonging to the Syngnathidae family. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable.
This fish grows to a maximum of 15–17 cm. Its body is slender and elongated, covered entirely in sharp thorns with dark tips. On the prehensile tail, these thorns are uniform in size, while the trunk features longer spines that extend up to the coronet, which itself has four to five spines. The head is also spiny, with projections on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and above the eyes. The snout is very long and tapered. Body color varies widely to match the surroundings, ranging from grey, cream, bright yellow, green, red, or brownish. It may be plain or have patterns on the sides or back. The snout usually has one or more thin white stripes.
The spiny seahorse is widespread but relatively rare across the Indo-Pacific. In Australia, it has been recorded from Ashmore Reef, the Timor Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and Port Stephens in New South Wales. It also occurs at Bali, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, and Japan. It prefers deeper waters, between 10 and 95 m, and is usually found below 15 m. It lives on various substrates, including sponges, weedy rocky reefs, soft corals, and especially seagrass beds.
It is carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and other plankton. Reproduction is ovoviviparous: the female uses an ovipositor to transfer eggs into a pouch under the male’s abdomen. The male fertilizes the eggs inside this pouch, which contains villi rich in capillaries that surround each egg, forming a kind of placenta. He provides physical protection, osmoregulation, aeration, and possibly some nourishment until the young are fully developed and expelled from the pouch to live independently.
Populations are thought to have declined by more than 30% over the last 10–15 years. The species is targeted for traditional medicine and the aquarium trade, and also suffers as bycatch in shrimp fisheries. Its inshore seagrass habitats are declining due to eutrophication, sedimentation, coastal construction, dredging, and invasive species, leading to habitat fragmentation. Like all seahorses, it is listed in CITES Appendix II, meaning trade must be controlled.
