Hippocampus slovenicus is an extinct seahorse species that lived in the Paratethys Sea during Europe's Middle Miocene. Its fossils, along with those of the related Hippocampus sarmaticus, were uncovered in 2005 from a coprolite-rich layer of the Dol Formation in Slovenia's Tunjice hills lagerstätte. This layer dates to the lower Sarmatian, about 13 million years ago, making these two species the oldest known seahorse fossils. The remains are mostly juveniles, plus adult heads and backbones. This species had a narrow head with a long snout roughly half the head length, 11 trunk rings, a short tail about 50% longer than the body with 25 to 26 tail rings, and an extremely long dorsal fin base. Small black pigment spots covered its body. The related H. sarmaticus shows similarities to modern pygmy seahorses. Both species likely lived among seagrasses and macroalgae in the temperate, shallow coastal waters of the western central Paratethys.
