Hippocampus pontohi, called Pontoh's pygmy seahorse or the weedy pygmy seahorse, belongs to the family Syngnathidae and lives in the central Indo-Pacific. It is named after Hentje Pontoh, an Indonesian dive guide from Bunaken (Manado) who first drew attention to these tiny seahorses.

This fish is one of the smallest seahorses, reaching about 1.7 cm long. Its body is slender and small, with a prehensile tail. The head is relatively large, making up roughly a quarter of the body size. The eyes are prominent, and the snout is moderately long without a bulbous tip. The coronet slopes backward, creating an angled profile. Small bulbs may appear on the trunk and tail. Red branching filaments sometimes grow from the coronet and the widest part of the back. The body is whitish, with yellow to pinkish coloring on the head and rear. Thin red lines may extend from where the cutaneous filaments start on the back, and the tail has red bands.

Pontoh's pygmy seahorse has been recorded in the central Indo-Pacific, specifically eastern Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It favors reef walls exposed to current and rich in *Halimeda* plants or the hydroid *Aglaophenia cupressina*, at depths between 11 and 25 meters.

It is carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and other plankton. The species is ovoviviparous: the male broods the eggs in a ventral brood pouch. This pouch contains villi rich in capillaries that surround each fertilized egg, forming a kind of placenta to supply the embryos. Once fully grown, the young are expelled from the pouch and become independent.

The population may be vulnerable to loss of *Halimeda* meadows due to ocean acidification, but the seahorse can use other habitats. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern. Internationally, it is listed in Appendix II of CITES, meaning trade is controlled to prevent use that threatens its survival, though it is not necessarily endangered.
