The Patagonian seahorse (Hippocampus patagonicus) is a marine fish of the family Syngnathidae, found in coastal waters from northeastern Brazil to Chubut, Argentina. It is notable for being the most commonly caught seahorse species in southern and southeastern Brazil, primarily as by-catch of shrimp fisheries, and for its status as a flagship species in Mar del Plata, Argentina, where it is declared a Natural Monument.

Hippocampus patagonicus typically measures 6–15 centimeters in length, with low spines, a short snout, and a long tail. Its coronet is a low ridge or wedge. Individuals are drably colored, ranging from pale to dark brown, yellow, red, or orange, with irregular dark striations and small white dots on the body and head. It inhabits shallow waters attached to natural or artificial substrates, including floating marine algae (Sargassum sp.), seagrasses, sessile invertebrates such as sponges, ascidians, and polychaete worms, or artificial substrates. In Argentina it is typically found to depths of 15 meters, while in Brazil individuals have been found in deeper waters to 120 meters.

This carnivorous species is an opportunistic predator, preying on amphipods (including Gammaridae, Caprellidae, and Hiperidae species) and decapods, with all sexes and sizes sharing feeding habits. Reproduction is ovoviviparous: females use an ovipositor to transfer eggs into a male's brood pouch, where they are fertilized and protected until the male gives birth to live young. Average gestation is 19.6 days, with an average brood size of 207 individuals in captivity. Offspring are 0.7 centimeters at birth. Both males and females reach maturity during their first breeding season (spring and summer) at around 11 centimeters. Life expectancy is two to three years. In San Antonio Bay, juveniles have been reported to demonstrate dispersive potential by rafting—attaching to floating substrates dispersed by currents—which may explain records in deeper waters but also makes them susceptible to being trapped in seine nets.

In 2004, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources implemented an unenforced and unmonitored seahorse export quota of 250 specimens per species, but quotas were violated by exporters who misidentified or mislabeled species to increase exports. In Argentina, H. patagonicus has been declared a Natural Monument in Mar del Plata, the highest conservation status available, prohibiting abuse, harm, capture, or captivity except for scientific purposes. It is considered a flagship species in Mar del Plata and is used to educate the community about the importance of coastal ecosystems.
