History
The club was formed in 1920 as Broughty Ex-Servicemen and was retitled Broughty Athletic in 1951. Around the same time they moved to Claypotts Park, opposite Claypotts Castle; the ground was renamed Whitton Park in 1989 in memory of player and official Eddie Whitton, who died on 5 June 1989. Following SJFA restructuring before the 2006–07 season, the club entered the East Region, North Division. They finished second in the North Division in 2007–08 and 2008–09, then gained promotion to the Premier League in 2009–10.
The club finished eighth in 2010–11 and ninth in 2011–12, and avoided relegation in 2012–13 due to league reconstruction. After a seventh-place finish in 2013–14, they won promotion to the Super League in 2014–15 via a play-off win over Armadale Thistle. In their first Super League season they finished tenth, and in 2016–17 they placed seventh and won the GA Engineering Cup, defeating Tayport 5–1 in the final. Jamie McCunnie, a former Dundee United and Scotland U21 midfielder, has managed the team since February 2018, after a short interim period.
Community
Broughty Athletic is part of the Dundee East Community Sports Club, the most developed model of a Community Sports Club the club is involved with. The Hub comprises five local football clubs, a rugby club, cricket club, tennis and table tennis club, bowling club, handball club, and karate club, providing a pathway from age five to adult level, including amateur and junior football. It is based around Whitton Park, Forthill Sports Club, Douglas Sports Centre, and Claypotts and Dawson grass pitches, and is developing links with local primary and secondary schools.
A development plan is being implemented within a five-year timescale, centred on upgrading Whitton Park to include a 7-a-side 3G floodlit training pitch and an 11-a-side floodlit playing pitch for community use. The 7-a-side pitch was built and in use from July 2012. Planned developments also include new changing facilities and a state-of-the-art stand on the west side of Whitton Park, with six changing rooms, a fitness suite, and meeting and socialising facilities.
The committee, drawn from all clubs in the structure, has established a branding and marketing profile displayed on team colours, and has delivered citywide fun day events and football festivals. The aim was for the new Whitton Park facilities to be built and operational before 2016.
