Lore & Background
In flashbacks, an ancient warrior asks the swordsmith Masamune for a sword of great mystical power, and Masamune's apprentice Muramasa offers to make one in half the time. Muramasa's evil nature is imbued into his creation, the Sword of Doom, which turns the warrior into the Black Samurai. Masamune's own Sword of Fate goes to the Green Dragon, who imprisons the Black Samurai in the Sword of Doom, hides it and marks its whereabouts in a riddle on the Destiny Scroll.
Reader's Guide
At the academy the gang meets Daphne's friend Miyumi, the head Miss Mirimoto and her bodyguard Sojo. After Shaggy and Scooby unknowingly solve the riddle, the gang finds the Sword of Doom on an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean and unmasks the Black Samurai as Sojo. Mirimoto then reveals that she staged the tournament to get the sword and resurrect the Black Samurai, and that her ninjas are robots. Shaggy and Scooby are trained by Matsuhiro, a sushi shop owner and samurai. With the Green Dragon's power Scooby uses the Sword of Fate to destroy the Sword of Doom, breaking the Black Samurai's curse. It is the last direct-to-video film in the visual style of What's New, Scooby-Doo?.
